  • 3 types of bullet trains (shinkansen) run between Tokyo & Osaka. "Nozomi" makes 4 stops and takes 2 hours 22 minutes. "Hikari" makes 10 intermediate stops and "Kodama" is the slowest with 15 stops. Reserve seats in advance for commuter hours & holidays.
  • Visit the scenic mountain town of Takayama for traditional wooden architecture, onsen (hot-spring baths) and spring & autumn fests
  • Hakone, two hours SW of Tokyo, is famous for its Mount Fuji views, mountains and lakes, onsens, outdoor sculpture museum.
  • The colorful temples and shrines in Nikko, at entrance to Nikko National Park in Tochigi prefecture, make nice day trip from Tokyo (1 hour 40 minutes by train). Stay overnight to explore nature trails and waterfalls.
